The World's Largest Private Cruises

Legendary, Unique, and Extremely Privileged, Sea Cloud

Legendary

Sea Cloud is a sailing cruise ship that is owned by Sea Cloud Cruises, which is based in Hamburg, Germany. It was built in 1997. It was originally built as a private yacht in 1931 and went on to serve as a weather ship for the United States Coast Guard and United States Navy during World War II, when it became the first racially integrated warship built by the United States military since the American Civil War. After the war, Sea Cloud was returned to private ownership, where it went on to serve as a yacht for a variety of clients, including the Dominican Republic’s president, among others. The Sea Cloud has been in service as a cruise ship since 1979.

Designs

The yacht interiors and features were designed by Post, who took a course in marine engineering and had full-size interior mock-ups done in a New York warehouse. When the Hussar V was introduced in 1931 to replace the Hussar IV, it was called Sea Cloud. She was the world's largest private yacht at the time of her construction. Hutton and Post in Bermuda received the ship on November 30, 1931, after it had completed its maiden voyage from the German shipyard.

Decor

In spite of the fact that the dining room and lounge at Sea Cloud are suitable for black-tie formality, there’s a certain lighthearted delight in enjoying it in casual attire. There will be no assigned seating, and there will be no need to dress up. In the former salon where Marjorie Merriweather Post received guests, Sea Cloud’s dining room is paneled in warm woods and hung with original oil paintings. It is located on the Promenade Deck, in the former salon where Marjorie Merriweather Post received guests.

Concept

Sea Cloud was designed by Cox & Stevens and built as Hassar II by Friedrich Krupp in Kiel, Germany, for Edward F Hutton and heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post. Following their divorce, Marjorie retained ownership of the yacht, which she renamed Sea Cloud. After serving in World War II, Sea Cloud was purchased by dictator Rafael Trujillo of the Dominican Republic, who renamed her Angelita, and later by Clifford Barbour, who renamed her Antarna. The yacht was reconstructed in 1978 by new German owners, who renamed her Sea Cloud after the original owner. The luxury yacht Sea Cloud, which has 60 crew members and 32 guest cabins, is available for luxury charter throughout the year.

Feature

Sea Cloud is a great choice because of its history, elegance, and extravagant charm. More than just a voyage along the coasts and islands of Homer’s wine-dark sea or among the warm turquoise waters and dependable tradewinds of the Caribbean, sailing aboard the 360-foot yacht is an opportunity to experience the ocean in a way that the ancients did. Swashbuckling sailors scramble up and down the masts to complete the rigging by hand. When the sails are fully extended, she is absolutely magnificent. Sea Cloud is equipped with 30 sails that cover a total area of 32,000 square feet, and its main mast stands at 178 feet in height. For guests who are willing to participate, the Sea Cloud occasionally offers a one-of-a-kind tour of participating guests’ rooms, allowing everyone to see and learn about the history of the different cabins available.

Advantage

Leader Design

The most striking feature of Sea Cloud is its four masts, 29 sails, and a tangled web of lines that stretches 178 feet into the sky to support the rigging, which is the ship’s most distinctive feature. Sea Cloud, in contrast to the modern, electronically operated Windstar Cruises ships or Star Clipper’s racier reproductions, is a genuine sailing vessel, with all sails set by hand. As the sails are furled, eighteen crewmembers scamper up the rigging and perform dazzling acrobatic acts while suspended over the ocean — and above your head. It’s quite the show.
