The Marina
The Bay of Islands has long been a meeting place of people and cultures. The teal and turquoise waters, the caramel beaches and the 144 emerald green islands which give this marine playground its name all provide a stunning visual backdrop against which visitors and residents alike gather to relax, explore, have fun and celebrate. The area is rich in history and heritage; this was where Māori and Europeans first met and mingled hundreds of years ago. The islands of the Bay are a holiday adventurers dream. Most are completely uninhabited, and almost all are littered with hidden beaches, where you can cast anchor, throw down a towel and spend the day basking in the sunshine, with the sand between your toes, and not another soul around. Few places can offer you your own choice of private beach every day for the duration of your holiday the Bay of Islands is one. Now it’s a cultural canvas, offering a myriad delightful insight into the way these two peoples, along with many others since, have melded to form today’s Aotearoa New Zealand. Whether you’re visiting for a short time or longer, and no matter what your interests and passions, the Bay of Islands has any number of stories waiting for you to tell.
