Sleek sedan takes a different approach, Lucid Air

Performance

The Lucid Air luxury sedan boasts luxurious appointments in a sleek all-electric package that is sure to impress. Additionally, the sedan has exhilarating acceleration and is capable of reaching a top speed of approximately 217 mph. Lucid promises that the Air will be equipped with autonomous and semi-autonomous driving technologies, which is exactly what we would expect from a Tesla competitor. Pricing for an entry-level model is expected to start at approximately $77,000. (before tax credits).

Models

Lucid Air Dream Edition First Drive showed that the electric sedan is smooth and quiet, with only a whisper of wind noise coming through the cabin. Even though it’s a good cruiser, it likes to put its strength to the test. Unlike a Nismo GT-R, this car is very fast. It jumps and bounds out of corners in the same way that one does. The more you push it, the more it gets better over time. Steering is quick, not too light or too heavy, and it feels like its right.

Technology

The Lucid Air took home our Car of the Year award for 2022, beating out other deserving contenders such as the Porsche Taycan, Honda Civic, Mercedes-Benz S-Class and EQS, among others. However, we must admit that Lucid’s electric sedan did not immediately win us over. The sound system, the power frunk, and even the Highway Assist feature on our Lucid Air tester had some pre-production glitches, which we were unable to reproduce. Nonetheless, by the end of our testing, we were completely blown away by this sedan’s excellent driving dynamics, luxurious ride, visually arresting and thoughtfully-designed interior, and spirit of innovation. Not only is it the fastest-charging EV on the market, but it’s also the first EV with a range estimate of greater than 500 miles. This is, without a doubt, the Next Big Thing.

Rivalry

The sleek sedan takes a different approach when it comes to the design of the inside. It doesn’t have as many screens as the Tesla Model S and Mercedes EQS, but they don’t take up the whole cabin like they do. A good mix of leather, wood, Alcantara, and metal is on the inside of the cabin. In fact, we’d go so far as to say that any car on the market has a better interior than the Lucid Air does. A lot of room in the back makes the deal even better. Do you think Lucid and Tesla can go head-to-head? Not at all. EV makers should see this new, powerful competitor as a real threat. Our First Test said that the Air is not only the best American luxury car in a while, but it’s also a great example of how to make a luxury sedan better.

2022 Lucid Air

To get around, the Lucid Air has a skateboard-like platform and up to three electric motors. It has different levels of power and range. A Lucid Air Grand Touring we tried out had 800 hp, 885 lb-ft of torque, and a 3.0 second 0-60 mph time. In terms of range, we’ve seen the Lucid Air almost reach 500 miles on a drive through California. The Air Dream Edition R can go 520 miles on 19-inch wheels, or 481 miles on 21-inch wheels. If you want the best performance, get the Air Dream Edition P, which has 1,111 horsepower. It can go 471 miles with 19-inch wheels and 451 miles with 21-inch wheels.

Systems

We’ve tested the Air’s real-world electric range of 490-miles, but all that battery wouldn’t be much use if it took days to charge it back up. Lucid shouldn’t have any problems with this. If you can locate a 350-kW Electrify America charger, the Air’s 900-volt electrical architecture will allow you to add 300 miles’ worth of electrons in just 20 minutes, thanks to its 900-volt electrical architecture. Tesla’s electric vehicles can only be charged at a maximum rate of 250 kW.
