Talk about a reversal of fortunes—or, as LeBron James puts it, a “silent revolution.” For the first time, the impending 2022 GMC Hummer EV will not run on gas like previous Hummers did, instead running on electricity. It will first be available as a pickup truck, with an SUV body style to follow at a later date. The first variants of the GMC Hummer EV to hit the market will be equipped with a three-motor all-wheel-drive setup. After a successful test drive, the Hummer EV Edition 1 will be the sole model available. The Edition 1 is a Hummer EV that incorporates the best of what GMC has to offer, in a manner similar to the Lucid Air and its inaugural Dream Edition offering.
Models
GMC is now selling the Hummer EV with four-wheel steering, which allows the vehicle to do a maneuver known as CrabWalk. When all four wheels are steering at the same angle at low speeds, the new electric truck may travel diagonally, allowing it to traverse through difficult terrain with the greatest amount of mobility.
Technology
Electric motors make a lot of sense for pickup trucks like the GMC Hummer EV, which will debut in 2022. The quick torque they generate potentially boost towing and hauling capability over even the most powerful diesel-powered heavy-duty vehicles on the market. Of course, there’s the added bonus of not emitting any of the pollutants that have earned some trucks, particularly older Hummer versions, a bad reputation. It was a real treat to get to test drive an electric Hummer prototype that was both on and off the road. On the pavement, we were delighted by the truck’s smooth ride and the fact that it exhibited virtually no body roll when making soft turns. When we were off-roading, the skid plates held up admirably as we crawled along massive stones.
Rivalry
GMC’s decision to pursue the development of an electric pickup truck is timely. Ford is well on its way to bringing an all-electric F-150 to market, and its partner Rivian has garnered attention with new information on its upcoming R1T electric pickup truck. Karma Automotive has released a mysterious teaser image of its next pickup. Of course, there’s also the mind-blowing Tesla Cybertruck, which is now in development. All of these vehicles are projected to be available on the market over the next couple of years, which coincides with the anticipated launch of the Hummer EV. It appears that the stage has been prepared for some electric pickup comparison tests—and, in the process, for a significant transformation of the truck business as we know it.

2022 GMC Hummer EV
Watts to Freedom maximum acceleration mode, four-wheel “CrabWalk” steering, adjustable air suspension, the Extreme Off-Road package, and Super Cruise semi-autonomous highway driving functionality are all included in the package. The Edition 1 also comes with a 13.4-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, among other features. Open-air driving is made possible with a panoramic moonroof with transparent removable panels, and GMC’s MultiPro tailgate is incorporated as standard equipment. A white exterior and a customized Lunar Horizon interior will be featured on every Edition 1, along with exclusive Edition 1 interior badging.
Systems
The first variants of the GMC Hummer EV to hit the market will be equipped with a three-motor all-wheel-drive setup. Although the engine is expected to produce around 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 lb-ft of torque, electric torque is measured in a different way than mechanical torque. Watts to Freedom mode is expected to achieve a 0-60 mph time of just 3.0 seconds, according to the manufacturer. Although we have yet to see official EPA range statistics, with vehicles such as the Tesla Cybertruck and Rivian R1T possibly capable of traveling more than 400 miles on a single charge, we should know within a few months whether the GMC Hummer EV can come close to eliminating range anxiety. According to General Motors, a fully charged battery has a range of more than 350 miles.

Furthermore, in addition to a lengthy electric range and potentially remarkable on-road performance, GMC intends to make the Hummer EV a very capable vehicle away from paved surfaces as well. The Extreme Off-Road package adds 18-inch wheels with 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler All Territory MT tires (although the fenders will clear tires up to 37 inches in diameter), underbody plating to protect the battery pack, and an extensive camera system that can act as a virtual spotter while driving off-road. The adaptable air suspension system has the capability of raising the car up to six inches higher than the vehicle’s normal ride height. In the fall of 2022, the Hummer EV will be available exclusively as an Edition 1 vehicle. Variants with more modestly configured drivetrains—including ones with a two-motor powertrain in place of the high-end models’ three-motor system—are expected to hit dealer lots by the spring of 2024, with a midrange e-AWD model arriving a year earlier.
