Well-organized

Sophistication and driver engagement, as some may expect, BMW X7

Performance

The BMW X7 is not a traditional BMW performance sedan oozing with understated sophistication and driver engagement, as some may expect. This is a new BMW, and the three-row SUV is the company’s largest vehicle to date, according to the manufacturer. The X7 was released as a 2019 model, and only minor revisions have been made for this year’s model. The X7, unlike the brand’s other celebrated sport sedans, isn’t particularly adept at cornering, but it certainly makes a statement when it does. If you can get on board with the concept of a three-row BMW, the X7 has a lot to offer in terms of features and comfort. All three rows are comfortable, and the cabin may be anything from nice to palatial depending on the options selected (which are plentiful). The cabin is well-organized and offers enough of storage room, albeit it falls short of giants such as the Lincoln Navigator or Cadillac Escalade in terms of total cargo space.

Which Features Will Be Included In The Next-Gen BMW X7 In 2022? Bluetooth and USB connectivity have both been improved as well. Electrical blinds are now available for the side windows that were formerly manual. No longer available are wireless charging and Harman Kardon audio systems. Glass controls are now available as an option for each individual user. On six-cylinder 40i vehicles, the Dynamic Handling package is no longer available.

Technology

The 12.3-inch infotainment screen on the X7 takes up most of the dashboard space. It is possible to handle BMW’s iDrive system in three different ways: through the touchscreen, via the rotary dial on the center console, or with optional gesture control. It will be possible to pair with many phones in 2022, and it will make apps and functions more easily accessible via Bluetooth and USB in the near future. Previously accessible wireless charging is no longer available, despite the fact that it was previously considered a basic feature. A digital gauge cluster is displayed on a second 12.3-inch screen for the driver. A head-up display is available as an option on xDrive40i models and comes standard on higher-trim vehicles.

Rivalry

The long flowing hood conceals a lot of muscle. The X7 is one of the most agile full-size SUVs on the road. When cranked to the utmost, the M50i or Alpina XB7 can make sports cars look amateurish. X7’s suspension is tuned for comfort above cornering ability to meet its role as a family hauler. A luxury interior, powerful engine, and excellent brakes made the XB7 a memorable Performance Vehicle of the Year, but body control was lacking. Compared to the X7, GLS-Class competitors like the BMW X7 start at a few thousand dollars less. Even at over $75,000, it’s not a steal. The X7 finally gives BMW fans more interior space than the X5. In a comparison test with the GLS, Escalade, and Navigator, the X7 came worst.

2022 BMW X7

In addition to automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring, the 2022 BMW X7 includes lane departure warnings and automatic high-beams as standard equipment. Adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist are available as options on the xDrive40i, but they are standard on all other BMW models. The X7 for 2022 is available in three trim levels, each with a more powerful engine than the previous year’s model. All three vehicles are equipped with all-wheel drive and an automated transmission with eight gears.

Systems

The standard X7 xDrive40i is powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine that produces 335 horsepower and 331 pound-feet of torque. It’s surprisingly quick—in 2019, MotorTrend measured a 0-60 mph time of 5.4 seconds, which is impressive for such a huge vehicle. The fuel economy is a poor 19/24 mpg in the city and on the highway. Buyers will need to upgrade to the X7 M50i if they want a V-8-inspired soundtrack. Its 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 produces 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. Because of the increased power, the 0-60 time is reduced to less than 5 seconds, but the combined city/highway fuel economy falls below 20 miles per gallon. The Alpina XB7 is the pinnacle of the mountain bike world. It is powered by the same V-8 design as the M50i, but a performance tune increases overall output to 612 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque (up from 590). According to BMW, the XB7 can go from 0 to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds. The M50i and the XB7 are both rated at 15/21 mpg city/highway by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Substitute

Many of the fastest SUVs on the road are manufactured in Germany for customers who want to be the first in line for school pickup. With the likes of the Porsche Cayenne Turbo, Audi SQ7, and Mercedes-AMG GLS63, the Alpina XB7 is up against serious competition. At 60 mph in under three seconds, our test Cayenne Turbo was the fastest of the bunch. A coupe-like SUV body can now be had in track-ready GT form if you can live with it. If you’re looking for a family car, the Cayenne may not be the best option because it doesn’t have a third row. Though it’s less expensive than the XB7, Audi’s three-row SQ7 is less capable than its competition. Most difficult to beat is the AMG GLS63, a potent performer with as much internal capacity as any BMW. In this crowd, the Alpina XB7 has a compelling argument. In addition to having greater power than the Mercedes, the interior features a crystal shift knob and myrtle burled wood trim for an air of refinement. As a tourer and a performance fanatic, it manages to tread a fine line.
