The Ford F-350 is the truck for you if your needs fall somewhere between extreme heavy duty and full-on commercial. This truck is available in three cab styles, two bed lengths, and with either single or dual rear wheels, allowing it to be customized to meet your needs. Technology

It should come as no surprise that the F-350 is extremely capable. With incredibly strong powertrains—including the most powerful and torquey diesel engine in the segment—and a frame designed to withstand the most extreme conditions, the F-350 makes towing and hauling heavy loads look effortless. What’s more surprising is how well-built the F-350 is as a vehicle. However, despite the fact that it is a massive heavy-duty truck (and, to be completely honest, the Ram Heavy Duty’s interior and exterior styling are preferred by the majority of MotorTrend editors), the Ford drives admirably for a vehicle of its size. The overall quality and execution are excellent, and the high-end trim levels are downright luxurious (and priced to match). The Ford F-350, a former Truck of the Year winner, continues to be a top contender among heavy-duty pickup truck buyers.

Rivalry

Its style is beginning to appear old, but beneath its menacing façade is an exceptionally capable truck. The F-350 is one of the most powerful trucks on the market. Many competitors exist, including the Ram 3500, Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD, and GMC Sierra 3500 HD, to name a few of them. Vehicles equipped with driver-assistance and active-safety systems, such as front automated emergency braking, trailer sway control, blind-spot monitoring with trailer coverage, adaptive cruise control, and a 360-degree view camera system, are available for purchase.

Systems

All F-350 engines are mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission that drives the rear wheels as standard, with four-wheel drive available as an option. The base engine is a 6.2-liter gasoline V-8 that produces 385 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque, according to the manufacturer. A 7.3-liter gasoline V-8 with 430 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque is also available above that. If you’re looking for a diesel, the F-350 is equipped with the most powerful and torquey turbodiesel engine available in the segment. It’s powered by a 6.7-liter V8 that produces 475 horsepower and 1,050 pound-feet of torque. This engine should be able to achieve a 0-60 mph time of approximately 7.2 seconds.

Substitute

The crew cab, long bed, 4WD configuration of the F-350 has the lowest payload of the entire range, weighing in at 2,890 pounds. The regular cab, long bed, rear-wheel-drive, dually model of the F-350 has the highest towing capacity, with a maximum towing capacity of 7,850 pounds. In the F-250 lineup, crew cab models equipped with 4WD and a 6.2-liter gas engine have the lowest towing capacity, with bumper to bumper towing capacity of 12,300 pounds. Several Powerstroke diesel engine configurations are capable of towing up to 21,200 pounds in various applications. The lowest capacity for gooseneck or fifth-wheel towing is 12,000 pounds in crew cab, 4WD, 6.2-liter gas V-8 models with the 6.2-liter gas V-8. On the high end, regular cab, rear-wheel-drive, diesel dually models have the ability to tow an incredible 35,750 lbs.
